7 Building Blocks of Resilience

21.09.20

During Term 3, Year 2 students at St Martin de Porres School participated in an eight-lesson Resilience Program facilitated by Active Education. Each week we have looked forward to our lessons where we learnt about the 7 Building Blocks of Resilience.

The 7 Building Blocks of Resilience

  1. Control
  2. Competence
  3. Coping
  4. Confidence
  5. Connection
  6. Character
  7. Contribution

Learning Intentions of the Program
• To encourage resilient creative thinkers who have the ability to build positive relationships and support networks.
• For students to develop skills and strategies to better manage emotions and build on their strengths so they are better equipped to face the challenges of today’s changing world.
• For students to meet challenges with confidence in themselves and their ability to succeed, even after setbacks.

In our first lesson we were introduced to the 7 Building Blocks of Resilience before focussing on control. We learnt about keeping calm to stay in control of our body and emotions. We also learnt that the only person we can control in any situation is our self.

In our second lesson we focussed on competence. We identified how we already cope with challenges. We learnt about using coping strategies to work through challenging individual and team tasks. When we feel frustrated, we can stop and think about our feelings, then breathe slowly while keeping calm and choose a way to solve the challenge.

In our third lesson we focussed on coping. We practised using the coping strategies learnt last week to work through challenging individual and team situations. We learnt about the “Power of Yet” and that when learning something new we need to practise and persevere until we are successful. We were given a small ball to remind us that at times we need to bounce back and persist with learning tasks and challenges.

In our fourth lesson we focussed on confidence. We participated in tasks where we had opportunities to recognise success and build confidence one challenge at a time. We learnt that we can build confidence by practising a skill until we know we can do it.

In our fifth lesson we focussed on connection. We learnt about making strong connections with our peers and understanding that communication is really important to maintain good connections with others. We also learnt that when we work together as a group, we can complete tasks successfully.

In our sixth lesson we focussed on character. We looked at personal values and the positive character traits that we can use to solve challenges.

In our seventh lesson we focussed on contribution. We looked at how we make a contribution to the people around us and the world. We learnt to evaluate if we are doing our fair share to complete group tasks.
