NAIDOC Week

07.07.22

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Students have been immersed in a range of activities which invite them to learn about  the rich culture of those who travelled this land before us. It has involved sharing and understanding the meaning of Dreaming Stories and creating artworks with natural materials to reflect this, investigating symbolism in Aboriginal artworks, learning the Aboriginal Lord's Prayer, making damper and Lemon Myrtle Scones, planting Australian native plants, reflecting on their flag and its relevance and discussing the issues that these people have faced.

Some facts the students learnt... Did You Know?

  • What does NAIDOC stand for? National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC)
  • What was the Theme for NAIDOW Week 2022? "Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!". A call for action to bring about “systemic change and keep rallying around our mob, our Elders, our communities.”
